Am I a Candidate for Spravato?

If you’ve tried multiple antidepressants and still feel stuck, SPRAVATO® (esketamine nasal spray) may offer a new path forward.

At Hudson Specialty Care Spravato, with multiple locations in New Jersey and New York City, we carefully screen each patient to ensure SPRAVATO is safe, appropriate, and likely to help.

Here’s how we determine your candidacy and what factors might rule you out.

What makes a good SPRAVATO candidate?

To be considered for SPRAVATO, most patients must meet clinical criteria based on studies and FDA guidance. Key qualifications include:

Having treatment-resistant depression (TRD)

We classify your depression as TRD when you’ve tried at least two antidepressants at an adequate dose and duration without sufficient relief.

The right age

You must be 18 years or older for SPRAVATO treatment.

Getting traditional mental health help

Before getting SPRAVATO, you must be under ongoing care for depression with a psychiatrist or mental health provider.

Good overall health

Good health and stable medical conditions are prerequisites for SPRAVATO, including controlled blood pressure and no recent history of aneurysm or uncontrolled hypertension.

Ability to undergo supervised treatments

You must be able to comply with the required monitoring during and after dosing sessions in our medically supervised office.

If you meet these primary criteria, you move to a deeper assessment to ensure your safety and the best response.

What might disqualify you from SPRAVATO?

SPRAVATO is a powerful solution for many people, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Some conditions or situations may rule it out, including:

  • Uncontrolled hypertension (SPRAVATO temporarily raises blood pressure)
  • History of intracranial hemorrhage, aneurysm, or recent stroke
  • Severe cardiovascular disease because of possible stress on the circulatory system
  • Substance use disorder (active, untreated)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions that might complicate monitoring

If any of these apply, we can discuss alternative therapies that may better suit your risk profile.

How we assess you at Hudson Specialty Care Spravato

If you’re interested in SPRAVATO, here’s how we walk through the process:

  1. Initial consultation — We review your medical and psychiatric history, past treatments, current medications, and any comorbid conditions.

  2. Physical and laboratory evaluation — We check your blood pressure, cardiovascular markers, labs, and any imaging or history relevant to neurological risk.

  3. Risk-benefit discussion — We review the potential benefits, side effects, and safety protocols with you in detail.

  4. Test dosing and monitoring — We closely observe the first few sessions and take your vital signs before, during, and after dosing.

  5. Follow-up and adjustment — We track your symptom progress and side effects, adjusting your plan as needed.

Because SPRAVATO requires a certified treatment center and observation time after dosing, our offices offer secure, safe, and comfortable dosing environments.

If you’re battling depression and haven’t found relief with standard treatments, SPRAVATO may be the option you haven’t tried yet. But the first step is careful evaluation.

Call Hudson Specialty Care Spravato in Cliffside Park, Elizabeth, or Edison, New Jersey, or Brooklyn or Manhattan, New York — or request an appointment online — to start a candid conversation about whether SPRAVATO is a good fit for you.
